Wat Lok Molee

The Wat Lok Molee (also written as Wat Lok Moli) is one of Chiang Mai's oldest and most visually striking temples, located just north of the historic old town's moat. Dating back to the 14th century, this temple stands out for its massive, atmospheric brick chedi (stupa) left in its beautifully weathered, unrestored state, which contrasts elegantly with the dark, intricately carved teakwood viharn (assembly hall) built in traditional Lanna style. Maintained by the royal Mengrai dynasty as a cremation and burial site for several kings, the temple grounds exude a deeply historic and spiritual atmosphere, guarded by two prominent white elephant statues at the entrance and featuring beautiful manicured gardens that make it a peaceful, photogenic sanctuary.
